The houses featured in this book are located on the coast between Malibu and Laguna and range from common generic types-- New England, Mediterranean and ranch designs-- to high-style homes by well-known architects such as John Lautner, Richard Meier, Frank Gehry, and others. If a beach house is designed with sensitivity, living on the beach can be an experience that is close to perfection. Beaches and beach houses have played an important part in the historical and cultural development of Southern California, beginning in the 1880s when land speculators wanted to attract home-buyers, and especially during the 1920s when the motion picture community and other nouveau riche built lavish houses and clubs on the shore. Interviews with the architects, interior designers, and owners of these fabulous California houses reveal the inspirational dimension embodied in this specialarchitecture. "Beach Houses" are the first survey of the glamorous beachfront lifestyle and distinctive architecture and design for which Southern California is so famous. Every beach house designer faces similar constraints and challenges: small lots, low-key street facades, enclosed sidewalls, narrow paths to the ocean, and glass-walled and terraced oceanfronts. Many helpful insights and confidence builders. There are lots of decorating ideas which is a bonus!. I ordered the Kindle version of How to Sell Art. The author J Jason Horejs is the owner of an art gallery located in Scottsville, Arizona and his advice seems to be universally applicable - even here in South Africa. One of the best and most topical books for gallery owners-one I will keep for reference. these are some of the most awesome beach houses in the world. It is great to find out we are doing so many things right and where our efforts could go further.. I love this book. It has proved to be an excellent handbook on the subject, particularly for artists, but also for art gallery workers. Fast shipping, great to deal with A+++ Thanks!!!. It is clear that the writer is an expert in his field. He offers step-by-step instructions on how to approach, engage, and help his customers acquire art. His love of art and respect for his customers is paramount. It lacks the illustrations which one expects to see in a book devoted to the subject of art but this is not a disadvantage as it is well written and easily conveys the essential information regarding the subject.. Have already recommended it to my gallery rep!

Some 25 houses are featured, all representing different architectural styles and each beautifully photographed. From Library Journal At first glance, this could easily be dismissed as just another coffee-table book, but careful reading shows that it provides a plethora of information about the beach houses of the wealthy in Southern California. Recommended for public libraries and academic architectural/interior design libraries.Glenn Masuchika, Chaminade Univ. Lib., HonoluluCopyright 1994 Reed Business Information, Inc. The author skillfully weaves into the narratives the hopes and dreams of the people who built these houses so that the reader can see how their wishes turned-or failed to turn-into architectural reality. . Accompanying each house is an essay, written for both the lay reader and the professional architect, that does not overwhelm with technical detail or bore with simple description
